Hillcrest High School is an established state, co-educational school for years 9-13 with a school roll of approximately 1800 students. We have 50 International Students from a wide range of countries.

We are a past winner of the national ' Excellence in Student Support Award', showing our commitment to pastoral care.


Our school is located near Waikato University, in a well-established Hamilton suburb. We provide quality education and promote success in the academic, cultural and sporting interests of our students. There are specialist facilities for Art, Music, Computing, Technology and Food and Nutrition. We have two Gymnasiums, a new Science block and a modern, innovative Library. Our new, purpose built International Centre also houses classrooms for our English Language learners.

 

  • International Students are encouraged to enter into all school activities and to take leadership roles.
  • We have a wide range of subjects in Year 9 and Year 10 with more specialized subjects in  Year 11-13. Cambridge AS Levels in English Literature and Mathematics are offered in Year 12 to selected students.
  • There is a wide curricular programme, including over 30 sporting codes, the school orchestra, SCAT (our school jazz choir), with Drama, Music and Debating having a high profile.
  • Junior school uniform is worn by Year 9 and 10, senior uniform for Year 11 and 12. Year 13 wear their own appropriate clothing.
  • The ESOL Department assists students at all year levels with English Language classes and four English Language Teacher Assistants. The Assistants provide individual and small group support. Our Foundation English programme offers more intensive English language tuition for those starting with a lower English level.

 

Hillcrest High School has an excellent record of academic achievement with a number of national Top Scholars plus a worldwide Top Scholar in Cambridge English Literature. International Students have gained national scholarships in Level 4 and four regional scholarships.


The International Department assists with Homestay Accommodation and provides pastoral support. Organized activities include the hugely popular International Concert and annual International Camp. Students participate in voluntary community projects and local events.


A BBQ is held to welcome new students at the International Director's home at the start of the year and another BBQ is held at the end of the year.

Year 10 students can apply to join the five week Great Barrier Island experience. This is an optional outdoor education course, the first such course organized by a state school. There is an extra charge for this camp which is in addition to the three day Year 10 camp.

General Areas of Study


Students are encouraged to study a course that specifically caters for their needs from a wide range of subjects available. We offer a personalised programme with a broad programme of study operates at Year 9 and Y10, with more subject specialities at Y11-13 in preparation for students entering tertiary studies or the workforce.


The senior school curriculum offers NCEA Levels 1 to 3 plus Level 4 Scholarship. In addition, Cambridge AS level in English Literature and Mathematics is offered at Y12 for selected students. Students are given the opportunity to enter the Australian Schools English and Science competitions.


Prior knowledge in some subjects in the senior school may be required along with an appropriate level of English proficiency for senior students.
Appropriate testing will take place on arrival at Hillcrest High School. The Foundation programme provides intensive instruction allowing gradual progression into mainstream classes.

Academic Achievement:

Hillcrest High School has a remarkable record of academic achievement.

  • In 2015 we gained 40 national Scholarships, one nationally recognised Outstanding Scholar and for one International  Student, a Regional Scholarship
  • In 2014 we gained 48 national Scholarships with one nationally recognized Outstanding Scholar
  • In 2013 Hillcrest High School gained 33 national Scholarships with the national Top Scholar in Mathematics with Statistics.
  • In 2012 Hillcrest High School gained 48 national Scholarships with 8 Outstanding Scholarships. We had the national Top Scholar in Mathematics with Calculus

  • A large number of our Year 13 students continue their studies and attend University and Polytechnics for their tertiary studies, both within New Zealand and internationally.

Accommodation options:

Many International Students live with parents, friends of their families or relatives (Designated Caregivers). Others live in school arranged homestays.

All requests for student accommodation are administered by the Homestay Manager Delwyn Dawson and International Director Raelyne Selby. An Application for a school Homestay should be made at enrolment as places are restricted.

 

Care and support for International Students


The Principal, Mr K Whiting, is actively involved in the welfare of our International Students. He is assisted by the International Student Director, Mrs Raelyne Selby.

Regular meetings are held with students and involvement in all aspects of school life is encouraged. The International Concert is an annual event which, along with school trips and social events, assists with the integration of International Students into the school community.
