International students are an important part of our community. Hamilton City Council and Study Waikato, the regional Education Organization has hosted an event on 22 May at the Hamilton Garden Pavilion to welcome the new international students to the Waikato region. Mayor Andrew King, Hamilton City Councillors, Study Waikato President Shirley Huang ( 怀卡托省教育委员会主席 黄女士) has attended the event together with Study Waikato members and invited international students in the region. The students are studying at Primary, intermediate, secondary, tertiary and PTEs and they are from all over the world. This year we have two students as the event MCs (master of ceremony) who have showed their talents and confidences. Our wonderful international students also performed singing, Gu zheng and shared their experience in studying and living in the New Zealand Waikato region. The brilliant Silver Medal winning Sacred Saint Concert band also performed at the event.
The Mayor King says: Welcome to the Waikato region and Hamilton City. You have made a wise decision for choosing the Waikato region where we have a wonderful landscape, beautiful attractions, great lifestyle and friendly people. I thank you all for your contribution to the region and the city and for sharing your cultures with us. We are here to support you all and to ensure you have wonderful experiences.
Ms Shirley Huang, President of Study Waikato said to the students: It is wonderful for New Zealand to be part of an education partnership which will touch many lives. We are proud to say that NZ and Waikato region offers a world-class education in a safe, welcoming and creative learning environment. I believe that studying in another country is an experience that has the power to expand your horizon and to create your bright future. I am always amazed by the passion and determination of our students. It is no surprise that international students often go on to very successful careers either in NZ, their home countries or internationally. We are very proud of what our international students have achieved and offered the world. We are delighted to have you here and wish you every success!
The purpose of the trip was to increase New Zealand’s and Waikato Region’s profiles and awareness in the international market — China. This was the first time for schools and institutions from the Waikato Region to undertake international marketing activities in China to build up a relationship with EIC (the largest well – known agent in China). Four institutions (Wintec, Cambridge High, Thames High and Evakona Education) from the Waikato Region participated in the activities. The EIC relationship was introduced by Shirley Huang (President of Study Waikato) which resulted in a positive outcome during the trip as we have seen from the Directors, Managers and consultants from EIC as they demonstrated their professionalism, knowledge, passion and enthusiasm to organize the events/interview sessions in the five cities.
The trip covered 5 cities which included Beijing, Zhengzhou, Wuhan, Guangzhou and Shenzhen; tier one to tier two cities. Beijing, Zhengzhou, Guangzhou and Shenzhen are top feeder traditional markets for New Zealand in terms of geographical perspective. Wuhan shows big potential due to the size of the city (one of the largest cities in China) and economic growth. The format of the events consisted of presentations from the Waikato region, individual schools and institutions, followed by interview sessions (one on one student interviews) and consultants on the spot training.
